Jack comes across an old foe in Saugis; Tony and Teri begin to head back to CTU; Kim finds herself in prison; and Senator Palmer anxiously awaits the outcome of both the California Primary and his stunning admission.
Detailed summary
LONG SUMMARY: As the sun goes down, Jack and Mason search the reserve until Mason is convinced they are wasting their time. He receives a phone call informing him that Alexis is out of surgery, and decided to leave to investigate a real lead rather than a red herring. But Jack wants to keep looking until 7:20, when Mason can send a car for him. Mason okays this and leaves.
Tony helps a wounded Dr. Parslow, and a sobbing Teri to his car and informs Teri that she didn't kill Kim after all. As they start driving, Tony calls Nina to tell her the news and Nina, after checking that Phil is indeed a friend and not a foe, suggests taking him to a clinic and then bringing Teri straight to CTU.
At the police station, Kim begs for a phone call and Melanie tells the officers not to listen to her because she lies. As Krugman goes to interrogate Melanie, Rick and Kim are left in the main area and Rick advises her that she should tell the cops everything that has happened to her over the previous 19 hours. Rick promises to back up whatever she says, even if it means getting in trouble.
At the hotel, Palmer goes to visit Nicole and tells her that they will need to stick together to pull through the next few weeks. Nicole gives him time alone with Sherry, who has just entered. She still believes that by airing his dirty laundry on national television, he has just lost the election. As Sherry leaves, she says she hopes his conscience will be there for him when it's all over and he asks her point blank if she means the campaign or the marriage, but she doesn't answer.
Jack finds a set of steps in the middle of the field and goes down into some kind of lair. As he does, he is captured by two armed men and taken inside. From a camouflage tent, Andre Drazen and his number two Harris wonder what Jack Bauer is doing there. Jack explains who he is to the warden of the facility, Mark DeSalvo of the Department of Defense. They're in a Class Three Detention Center. DeSalvo informs him that a prisoner is being flown in but the identity is classified, and the prisoner is randomly moved every few weeks. Jack knows that the Drazens must want to kill or set free this guy, and asks for backup. Although they can't get there in time at least they can be there if there is an emergency. There are only seven people working at the facility, but Jack orders to have them all ready to attack anyway. Andre and Harris, after arguing over the successfulness of their plan, prepare to attack. They aren't impressed to see every man the facility has got waiting outside for the helicopter. As the helicopter lands, DeSalvo takes the prisoner, whose head is covered up, inside. Andre wants to proceed even with the power on but Harris tells him they can't possibly win vs. so many lights and men. Andre is forced to comply, and think up their next plan as the helicopter departs overhead.
At 7:27 PM, Kimberley is escorted into Krugman's room She tries to tell him about her father, and CTU but he won't have any of it. He only wants to know about Frank and the deal, which she knows nothing of. She tries to tell him about Palmer, and being kidnapped, but Krugman doesn't believe a word especially since Melanie told him that Kim lies a lot. As Krugman orders her to a holding cell, she writes him the number of CTU and asks him to call and see if she really is just screwing around.
Underground, DeSalvo asks Jack if he really is telling the truth, and Jack begs him to believe that there is a contingency plan already in operation. He wants to talk to the prisoner, but DeSalvo doesn't have the authority to let him. Mike pays a visit to Palmer, to show him that the polls are steady or actually increasing. Jack calls Palmer and asks him to go over the head of DeSalvo. Palmer tells him he'll try before hanging up. Jack finds a set of wires and follows them to an observation room where he searches for a monitor with a view of the holding cell. DeSalvo enters in time to find Jack staring into the eyes of Victor Drazen, whom he killed two years ago. Andre tells Harris they must assume the worst for Alexis, and they begin going about cutting off the power themselves.
Mason arrives back at CTU, where he tells Nina about Jack, and about Alexis who won't talk. When Nina questions why he hasn't told Jack about his family, Mason says that Jack needs to be concentrating on Palmer, who will probably be the next President.
At a small staff party for said President, he tells Sherry that he doesn't love her anymore. She has lied and he can't trust her. She says that he will never leave her, for he can't in his position and she promises to be by his side when he gets sworn in.
Krugman drops Kim off in a cell filled with other criminal women.
Jack decides that someone decided Drazen was more valuable alive than dead and designed Nightfall so it wouldn't work in the first place. DeSalvo tells Jack that he has permission to interrogate Drazen. Jack goes to see him, and informs him he knows about the botched Nightfall mission, and begs Drazen to let his family live. Jack wants Drazen to communicate with his sons however he has been doing, and call it off because back-up is arriving anyway. Drazen refuses and as Jack gets angry, DeSalvo enters to inform him they have permission to move the old man out a secret exit. DeSalvo and his staff march along the corridor until suddenly, the lights go out. Everyone waits anxiously as Drazen smugly informs Jack that his sons have arrived.
Notes
Dennis Hopper was uncredited to increase the element of surprise. Lou Diamond Phillips' character was named after the winner of a 9/11 charity auction held especially for that purpose. Both were listed as 'Special Guest Stars'
