Short summary
Agent Jack Bauer of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit is called in to protect a black US Senator running for President. What he hasn't counted on is the fact that there are forces inside his own agency against him, and his family may be in danger as well.
Detailed summary
LONG SUMMARY: It is just after midnight on the day of the California Presidential primary. At the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) in Los Angeles, Agent Richard Walsh receives word that someone is targeting Senator David Palmer for assassination. Senator Palmer, the first black person with a real chance at the White House, is as yet unaware as he sits writing his campaign speech at his LA hotel with his wife Sherry and assistant Patty.
Somewhere else in the city, CTU Agent Jack Bauer finishes playing chess with his teenage daughter Kimberley and she heads off to bed. He and his wife Teri, who have recently been separated, discuss how Kim is playing them against each other but when they go to talk to her find that she has snuck out. As they search for clues to her whereabouts, Jack receives a call from co-worker Nina Myers, whom he dated during his separation. She tells him that Walsh has called him in for an urgent meeting.
Jack calls friends of Kim's on his way into work but no one knows where she is. She has in fact gone out with a friend, Janet York, to party with two guys named Dan and Rick at a furniture store where the former works and they proceed to have a party inside. Janet and Dan have sex while Kim makes up a story about a dead father to tell Rick.
At CTU, Jack meets with Nina and the agents, who are told that a foreign power is after Palmer, presumably employed by a domestic hate group. Walsh talks to Jack privately - someone inside the agency may be involved and Jack has to find out who, as he is the only one Walsh can trust. Jack isn't sure he can infiltrate the group because he is well known for putting away dirty agents. Walsh says it is vital that this happens.
Later, District Director George Mason arrives at CTU and gives Jack a clearance card to get him anywhere, but he refuses to name who gave him the card. Nina tries to get information out of Jack but he won't tell her because he can't trust her. Jack orders Mason to phone his superior and find out the origin of the card, Mason pretends to and Jack finds out so, fearing he can't trust him, shoots him with a tranquiliser. Nina is understandably not impressed so Jack tells her that Mason is suspected of stealing money and asks her to get blackmail info on Mason.
Teri finds drugs in Kim's room and calls Jack anxiously. She also gets a phone call from Janet's father, Alan York, and they arrange to meet to find the girls. Jack gets a hacker, Jamey Farrell, who has been called in because of the Palmer threat, to find out Kim's email password and they discover where she was headed. Jack gives Teri and Alan the address of the store. Jack needs some more hacking, so he asks Nina to get an admirer of hers, Agent Tony Almeida, to do so. She does but he resents the fact that Jack turned in his own colleagues and is not impressed about doing this. He also is wondering if Jack is still sleeping with Nina. Teri leaves Kim a message on her phone as she and Alan head off. Kim and Rick bond before she finds the message and Dan agrees to take her home
On the news, reporter Maureen Kingsley announces that the polls open at 7 AM and Palmer is expected to clinch the election. Kingsley calls Palmer about an allegation she plans to air and he refuses to confide in his wife about it
Jack finds blackmail evidence against Mason and forces him to reveal who gave him the card. After that, Mason storms out of CTU angrily. Jack tries to call Teri but something kills the call
On a plane nearing LA, Martin Belkin - a photographer - arranges to meet the Senator. A fellow passenger named Mandy seduces him and they have sex in the toilet, after which she steals his wallet and his ID. A little before 1, Mandy plants a bomb on the plane and jumps off just before it explodes
CTU is informed about the plane crash, and Jack orders a passenger list. Kim realises Dan isn't taking her home and she begins to complain, just as they unknowingly pass Teri and Alan at an intersection. Mandy comes down to land in the Mojave Desert. The clock is ticking...
Notes
Main cast for season 1: Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer), Leslie Hope (Teri Bauer), Sarah Clarke (Nina Myers), Elisha Cuthbert (Kim Bauer) and Dennis Haysbert (David Palmer). The first season is one of only two in which the main cast remains the same from beginning to end, the second being season 3.
Sarah Clarke was originally credited as Sarah Lively in FOX Press Releases.
Xander Berkeley, Carlos Bernard and Penny Johnson - all to become main stars in season 2 - were not credited as such in season 1. Bernard and Johnson are special guest stars, while Berkeley's infrequent appearances are credited as guest star.
The series was originally called '24 Hours', the 'hours' was later dropped. This was not the only change, footage of the airplane explosion was cut because of the recent 9/11 attacks. The original pilot also began in Venice, not Kuala Lumpur.
Mia Kirshner (Mandy) was also advertised on a lot of promotional material, however ended up only appearing in 3 episodes of the season, before scattered appearances in following seasons.
